The best American Car 2014

1. Ford Fusion
The Fusion blends seductive styling, lively handling, and comprehensive—if sometimes frustrating—tech features. The base engine is a 175-hp 2.5-liter four, but optional 181-hp 1.5-liter or 240-hp 2.0-liter turbo fours aim to provide a little extra zip. All are mated to a six-speed automatic with front- or all-wheel drive. Two hybrid models are available, both with a 2.0-liter four paired with an electric motor for a combined 188 hp; the plug-in model offers a 19-mile electric-only range.

2. Honda Accord
The Accord’s pleasing blend of engaging driving dynamics and a comfortably spacious interior keeps it at the top of the market. Available as either a sedan or a coupe, the Accord can be outfitted with your choice of a 185-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6. Six-speed automatic and CVT transmissions are available, but the slick six-speed manual is a joy to drive. The hybrid model boasts a superb 50-mpg city rating; a plug-in hybrid is also available but only in limited markets.

 3. Mazda 6
The Mazda 6’s sinuous styling, confidence-inspiring handling, and rich interior make it one of the best-looking and most enjoyable family sedans around. Powered by a 184-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder and driving the front wheels through either a crisp six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, the 6 is efficient, but acceleration is relaxed compared to some of its rivals and additional powertrain options would be nice. Still, we love its finesse, which is why we keep naming it to our 10Best list.

4. Volkswagen Pasat
Longer and wider yet way down in price, the VW Passat is designed for and produced in the good old U.S. of A. VW’s once-upscale Audi fighter is retooled and ready to do battle with Honda and Hyundai. With the old 2.5-liter five, a new 1.8-liter turbo four, a 3.6-liter VR6, and a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel, the Passat offers a handsome, roomy interior and decent road manners but lackluster exterior styling

Good luck!
